Macomb Township, Michigan – Building Official
One of Michigan’s fastest growing communities is seeking a seasoned and certified professional to serve as its next Building Official.

The Building Official is a full-time position and is responsible for planning and supervising the operations and activities of the Building Department, including the enforcement of and compliance with codes, ordinances and regulations. This position oversees day-to-day department operations, and works closely with builders, architects, residents and property owners to promote a clear understanding of Township requirements.
The Township’s ideal candidate will have experience in planning, zoning, construction, inspections, and plan review along with strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervises 15 personnel to enforce laws and ordinances relating to the Michigan Construction Code, plan reviews, issuance of permits, stop work orders, certificates of occupancy and citations as well as local zoning and code of ordinance requirements.
- Works closely with other Township departments to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances including but not limited to the Department of Public Works, Engineering Department, Planning Department and Fire Department.
- Enforces code and ordinances relating to building, electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration and property standards by developing procedures and policies for making inspections to ensure that each of the activities conform to Township ordinances and State law.
- Conducts meetings with builders, architects and their technical staff, residents, property owners, staff as appropriate to promote a common understanding of Township ordinances and codes.
- Recommends to the Township Board changes in codes and ordinances to keep abreast of new concepts, practices and procedures and materials.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in construction management or architecture preferred.
- Seven (7) years of recent full-time experience including a combination of building construction, planning, zoning, inspection and plan review, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Strong management and leadership skills with at least three (3) years of full-time supervisory experience preferred
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
- Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License in good standing. Must hold a Building Official, Plan Examiner and Inspector Registration as designated by the State of Michigan.
